I Agree, But My Idea …

Q: Do you know the difference between the Taliban and some of the Managers I’ve worked for? A: You can negotiate with the Taliban.

It’s important that you are afforded the opportunity to provide input – but why do all roads lead back to your idea? Let’s be honest – if all you do is struggle to have things your way, does it really matter what you wrap around the framework? It’s obvious what you want.

As Manager, this should be the part where you are enlightened enough to open your mind to other viewpoints. You’ve made it abundantly clear that your way of thinking or your cause has to be reviewed, but do you insist that it be accepted as the Gospel, no questions asked? This is the point where I want to slap you in the face.

Here’s how people really perceive you:

  • Arrogant
  • Myopic
  • Self-Centered
  • Stubborn
  • Annoying

Need I say more? Shut your mouth and open your ears. If you work for a company or are involved in somebody else’s cause – try to think about how to embody the spirit or mission of that organization. It’s not always (or often) about how you’d approach it.
